6 Things to Carry in Your Hiking Backpack

Your vacation to the Great Smoky Mountains is just around the corner and it’s time to get your things together! The only question is, what do you pack to take on your hike? As you plan what to bring, we have made a list of six things. These items will help you enjoy the beautiful Smoky Mountains.

1. First Aid Kit

Whatever you bring you can never be too prepared. Packing a good first aid kit with all of the essentials is the first thing to stick in your pack. Bring something small enough to pack that will still hold a variety of bandages and ointments. Here are some of the basics: a snake bite kit, antibacterial ointment, blister treatment, adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and more!

2. Navigation

There are many ways to navigate the Smokies. It’s essential to stick to the trail, but just in case, here are a few things you can pack. Bringing a good, old-fashioned compass is perfect, make sure you know how to use it!

Additionally, downloading the AllTrails app will make your hike so much easier. With it, you can download trail maps, track your distance, and understand what you’re getting yourself into.

3. Safety Tools

You can never be too careful when you’re out in the woods. It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling with a group or out on your own, carrying safety gear is important. Pack a multi-tool or knife, some people will carry a small machete, along with bear spray.

For longer, more intense hikes pack an emergency shelter and a fire starter. It might seem extra, but if you get caught in a downpour or something unexpected happens, being prepared never hurts.

4. Water Bottle

Whatever you do, stay hydrated! Pack a large water bottle that can carry enough water for the entire day and don’t forget to drink it.

If you only have enough room for a smaller bottle, consider getting a water filter press. These water bottles make it easy for you to filter your water as you’re out on the trail and won’t leave a chance for you to go thirsty. You can order them online or pick one up from your local outfitter.

5. Food

Snacking is of the utmost importance. You’ll need the extra nutrients as you venture over the hills so make sure to pack plenty of food. Everyone now and then you can stop and grab a bite to eat, giving you that extra burst of energy you’ll need. To have a balanced diet as you hike beef jerky, trail mix, energy bars, cheese and crackers, and dried fruit.

6. Trekking Poles

If you’ve ever been on a trail and have been passed by some other hikers with trekking poles you might have asked yourself, “Why do they even need those?” But don’t turn your nose up at them just yet.

Trekking poles can make all the difference on a steep trail or a long hike. They take some of the weight off of your ankles and can help you travel faster as you head up the mountain. If you would classify yourself as a clumsy person then trekking poles are a must! You’ll never trip again when you bring them along.

If you plan to go hiking then these six things are essential to your trip. Don’t forget to pack them while you’re stuffing your bags. After your hike, you’ll want a comfortable place to stay. Click here to check out some of the most cozy cabins around!
